The outside edge of the tile will be covered by a rake tile on a gable end or a hip and ridge tile on a hip so precise cutting is not necessary. A saddle hip is when the cap slate is installed over the finished slate roof on either side creating a saddle effect.

The slate nearest the hip slate must remain a full slate. The anchoring methods vary. Most hip installations involve the weaving of copper flashing sheets between roofing shingles. There are many ways to construct copper ridge and hip flashings.
